The line, and its association with Garbo, was clearly well-known by 1930. In that year, the humorous writers W. C. Sellar and R. J. Yeatman published Garden Rubbish. The punning chapter headings, consisting of supposed quotations, included, ‘“I want to be a lawn.” Greta Garbo.’ Two years later, as noted by Barry Paris in his 1995 biography Garbo, Marion Davies and Jimmy Durante parodied the Garbo-Barrymore love scene from Grand Hotel. In Blondie of the Follies, Davies said ‘I vant to be alone’, and then conceded that after she would accept Durante’s company for a limited period: ‘Vell, maybe for a veek.’
